FORTRESS MALATESTIANA This fortress, even called “fortress of the rock” because of its position on top a spur of rock that overlooks the town, is one of the biggest and best preserved malatestian fortresses. It underwent architectural changes, overlaps and mixes that goes from the XII to the XVI centuries. “Il Mastin Vecchio” lived in this fortress, he was the progenitor of the Malatesta family and was named by Dante Alighieri in his “Divina Commedia”. Currently the Malatestian Fortress of Verucchio exhibits an outstanding collection of medieval weapons; it is possible to admire the scale model of the first fire cannon from the Occident, some front-charge weapons, armors from the 1400’s and a strong cannon from the XV century. |
