Fortress of the rock

FORTRESS MALATESTIANA

This fortress, even called “fortress of the rock” because of its position on top a spur of rock that overlooks the town, is one of the biggest and best preserved malatestian fortresses. It underwent architectural changes, overlaps and mixes that goes from the XII to the XVI centuries. “Il Mastin Vecchio” lived in this fortress, he was the progenitor of the Malatesta family and was named by Dante Alighieri in his “Divina Commedia”. It is possible to visit the building entirely. Inside the fortress you can visit:

The Major Room
different rooms that usually lodge exhibitions and interesting set ups.
The highest tower from with its wonderful terrace, from where you can admire the astonish view.
The secret passages.
The capacious cistern from the XIII century (28 mc.) perfectly functioning still now.
The betterment.
The guards room and the clock tower.

Currently the Malatestian Fortress of Verucchio exhibits an outstanding collection of medieval weapons; it is possible to admire the scale model of the first fire cannon from the Occident, some front-charge weapons, armors from the 1400’s and a strong cannon from the XV century.
